Allah is الفتاح, The Opener

Last year in the spring I felt disconnected from myself. It was difficult for me to understand what was happening, I felt restless, I knew something wasn’t quite right but could not pin point at what it was. I found myself wanting to make hasty decisions but Alhamdulilah I found support to repel negative thoughts. One day, I left to the lake near my house immediately after my husband got home. I left without my coat or proper shoes or a purse or anything. I just wanted to be in a different and in nature. I watched the frozen lake and cried to Allah. I had no idea what I could make dua for, I had no idea what I wanted. I reached for a paper and struggled to find a pen. I wrote and wrote and wrote…. at the end I said:

“Ya Allah, Ya Fattah, open the doors that are closed from me and I am not aware of.”

This was a Dua one of my students shared in our Tafseer class few days prior and it was the only thing I could think of and make dua for.

Allah answered this dua in a way that makes me amazed and grateful. Fath in Arabic has so many meanings. Openning, victory, triumph, clarity, knowledge, guidance, revealing of what is hidden, to prepare, to make aware, to facilitate… and much more. He gave me all of that!
